Small Steps Can Lead to Big Strides - First in a Series

In my last blog I talked about the idea of letting your resolution “emerge” as you settle into the New Year.  But let’s face it, it’s the New Year and most people take this opportunity to make decisions about life changes.  As I have been doing radio interviews for my book, this theme continually arises.

The underlying idea in my book is that as we begin to take small steps in changing our lifestyle, we can gain big strides toward achieving a healthy, balanced life.

In my next few blogs, I will talk about some of the small changes you can begin to make in your food selection and approach to moving more.

Bossy the Colon

There is an old joke about all of the body parts having a meeting to decide which one was the most important and should therefore be the boss.*

The Brain said, "I should be the boss because I run the body's systems. Without me nothing would happen."

The Blood declared, "I should be the boss because I circulate oxygen and nutrients all over the body. Without me you'd waste away."

The Stomach said, "I should be the boss because I process food that gives all of you energy."

The Legs said, "I should be the boss because I carry the body wherever it needs to go."

The Eyes said, "I should be the boss because I allow the body to see where it goes."

Hearing all of this the Colon protested, "I am the boss because I’m responsible for waste removal."

All the other body parts laughed at the Colon and insulted him. So in a huff, he went on strike and refused to work.

Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got blurry, and the blood was toxic.

All the body parts conceded. The Colon really was the boss!

*This story was cleaned up for the purposes of this blog

If you have ever experienced a colon that has gone on strike for a few days, I’m sure you appreciate the value of a happy colon. But your colon does much more than waste removal.

The misunderstanding about fat is just one example of confusing health and wellness news I clarify in my Wellness Conversations.

But for now, let’s stick with fat and get down to the nitty-gritty of fat what it really is.

Here it is.  Drumroll please.

How Sweet is Isn’t…

sweetenerAs you know, I am a health-news nerd.   I eagerly dive into any new science about food, exercise and healthful lifestyle.

I love knowing what’s new in the research or even the scuttlebutt.  I keep an eye on trends to see what kind of information is being released to the public and what isn’t.

This is my idea of fun.  Really.

The downside of this is that sometimes information becomes old news to me, before it has even become new news to the general public.  The other downside is that I can be a little neurotic, I’ll admit it, about the foods I eat, how they are prepared and other lifestyle choices.
